Hamilton Ecological Consulting

Independent ecological consulting grounded in decades of British Columbia forest and fire research — turning field data into practical guidance for sustainable resource management.

About

Evelyn Hamilton — Founder & Director

Hamilton Ecological Consulting is led by Evelyn Hamilton, an ecologist with more than 30 years of experience in British Columbia's forest and fire ecology. For much of her career she worked in the Research Branch of the BC Forest Service, where she managed the Ecology and Earth Sciences Section.

Her work centres on building and leading multi-agency, interdisciplinary teams to solve natural-resource management challenges — with deep knowledge of British Columbia's ecosystems. Recent focus areas include ecosystem response to fire, non-timber forest products, and adaptation to a changing climate. She has also held an adjunct faculty appointment at Royal Roads University and is affiliated with the Bulkley Valley Research Centre.

Non-timber forest products

Research on culturally and ecologically significant plants — including berry-producing shrubs — and their management.

Climate-change adaptation

Helping resource managers anticipate and adapt to changing ecological conditions across British Columbia's forests.

Data synthesis & collaboration

Building and leading interdisciplinary teams, pooling field datasets, and synthesizing evidence to answer applied management questions.

Selected projects

Recent work

2018–2020

Burning Questions (Database 2020)

Led the team that rescued at-risk fire-effects field data from central British Columbia into a single database (db2020) and used meta-analysis to answer land managers' priority questions about fire, recovery, and resilience. Funded by FESBC and the BC Ministry of Forests.

2023–2025

Grizzly Bear Forage — Berry Project

Contracted by the Province of BC (Ministry of Forests; Dr. Garth Mowat) to study black huckleberry and soapberry as food sources in grizzly bear habitat — modeling how logging, site, and climate shape berry abundance. Contracts RE24REM102 / GS25RMB0008.
